A History of Legal Services in Nhill
O’Brien & Smith Lawyers is proud to continue a legal tradition in Nhill dating back to 1888.
1888
John William Trumble commenced a Law Practice under his name in Nhill. John his brother Hugh played test cricket for Australia as an off spinner and batsman. John introduced golf to the Wimmera after a visit to St Andrews golf club when he toured the UK. He was instrumental in establishing a Golf Course in Nhill.
1906
John William Trumble’s practice was acquired by Charles Palmer and became Trumble & Palmer. Members of the Palmer family remained involved in the practice under that name until 2005. Maurice Stewart joined the firm in 1976 and later became a partner with Charles Palmer.
1930's
R.B. Turner commenced legal practice in Nhill. That practice later became Turner & Hobday when John Hobday joined the firm. In the mid-1970s, the firm became Hobday & Lipshut when John Hobday and Philip Lipshut became partners.
2005
Charles Palmer retired and John Hobday was also close to retirement. As a result Phil Lipshut & Maurice Stewart agreed to merge their respective legal practices and became Stewart & Lipshut.
2021
Philip Lipshut retired and Maurice Stewart acquired his interest in the partnership. The practice then continued as Maurice Stewart Legal.
2026
O’Brien & Smith Lawyers is the successor firm to these longstanding Nhill legal practices, continuing the provision of legal services to the local community as part of a broader regional law firm.
